02/17/19 - West Rock Ridge & Konold’s Pond. Woodbridge (observations from the ridge top, 1:45-3:45 PM) — Common Raven (2). The resident pair (both present) has begun forming the nest bowl on an inaccessible rock ledge, using Eastern Redcedar and Grape Vine bark peelings. The bowl is partially complete in the center of a nest that at present is still somewhat skimpy on large- and medium-sized sticks. More work to be done before egg-laying begins, late February to early March. Also present at Konold’s Pond: 2 Bald Eagles (a 2nd year bird and a full adult). The immature eagle was feeding on the ice (blood evident but prey item not seen - probably a duck killed by a peregrine), lifted off, and was met in the air over the pond by the adult, which pushed the immature out of the area and to the north toward Lake Dawson. Estimated 200 Ring-necked Ducks, Northern Pintail (1 drake), Wood Duck (5), Mallard and American Black Duck (combined 90), Hooded Merganser (2); Canada Goose (20+), Mute Swan (2), Great Blue Heron (1), Peregrine Falcon (2, the tiercel, and the female with a very full crop - studied on her perch for 20 minutes. May be a new female to the ridge).
