We appreciate the responses we received to the questions we posed in our original post. Some of the responses posed additional questions, some prurient, regarding how it happened. In summary, we were trying to hurry into an anchorage after a long, windy day coming down the Chesapeake from Annapolis. We steered too close (about 25 feet) to the Great Wicomico Light -- rookie mistake. The locals were surprised at our foolishness since the rocks that surround it are visible at low tide. Alas, it was not low tide, and we were not locals. Our starboard side running gear (except, apparently, the rudder) is toast. Fortunately, however, everything on the port side is okay, and the hull is not holed, so we were able to anchor for the night and go into Jennings Shipyard (at about 5 knots) in Reedville the next day. We pulled the boat there, and saw the sickening sight.

Ironically, Jennings Shipyard was our first choice for over-wintering the boat, and it has an excellent local reputation. However, since it is small, we're not sure they have the capability or desire to take on a project like ours. They are in the process of generating an estimate, but we may have to move the boat, and will appreciate advice regarding nearby yards with the kind of experience we need. The starboard prop strut remains our number 1 concern.

Unfortunately, we had to return to our home near Galveston for some important personal business, and we are being forced to negotiate repairs long distance. Any advice will be appreciated.

. Any advice will be appreciated.
Hi Tom,

I'm in Seabrook myself. A friend of mine here has an older Defever 44 that
was damaged in Ike. He was able to get pretty much everything he wanted
from Defever. Those struts are tricky things, so I would check with your
nearest Defever dealer and see if you can get it from them. I guess our
dealer is Bettis.
AS I write this, now I'm trying to remember if he said he went through the
dealer or dealt with Defever directly. I can try to get his contact info if
you want.
Another local guy destroyed the strut on a 4 year old Island Gypsy after
they went out of business. He ended up having someone in Houston custom
forge a new strut to the tune of something like $6K! Half of that was just
making the pattern.
Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing!
