Visitors:
We are located by the boat launch in Lake Erie Metropark in a fenced off
area at the Hawk Watch site. This does not mean that we do not welcome
interaction with any and all visitors. We enjoy talking about what we do
and sharing our knowledge with beginners and experts alike. Please feel
free to come up and talk to us. We usually have our backs turned to the
parking lot as we scan the skies in front of us. This should not be
interpreted as a sign of reluctance to engage; this is how we do our job.
We have friendly people that do not bite and the welcome mat is always out.
Weather:
Mother Nature was in a bad mood today. She huffed, and she puffed, and blew
the whole count down.
A shortened watch was conducted today due to wet and windy weather
conditions. If your ears are popping today itâs because the barometer
dropped four tenths of an inch since midnight. Gusty winds, occasionally
reaching fifteen mph, came from an adverse direction for our site. The
temperature climbed to sixty-eight degrees on the back of that wind.
Raptor Observations:
Only 19 birds were counted today. Turkey vultures numbered 16, sharp-shins
occupy their normal position on the list in second with 2 present and
accounted for. A lone American kestrel was seen.
Non-raptor Observations:
There were more leaves flying today than birds.
Predictions:
The winds will still be blowing hard tomorrow and will likely have negative
effects on the count. The barometer will remain low and weather may be
occasionally wet as a cold front passes.
