Due to the almost 20 inches of rain dumped along the Gulf Coast, a levee
alongside the cut connecting Chocktawhatchee Bay (Fort Walton Beach and
Destin) to West Bay (Panama City area) has collapsed and choked off the
GIWW. This collapse is just about in the middle of the 15-mile long canal
connecting the two bays. Until the cut is restored (we have no information
as to when that may happen) vessels will be required to use the St Andrew
Bay (Panama City) on the eastern side and Destin or Pensacola Bay passes on
the western side of this area. The shortest Gulf transit around this
problem is the 42 nautical mile run between Destin Pass (49-foot bridge
clearance) and St Andrew Bay pass at panama City.
