Hi All.
A good friend of mine returned to his boat which had been on the hard in
Florida to find a number of small piles of saw dust throughout the cabin.
Termites, of course. All the walls are sandwiched i.e. glassed Marine
plywood on the outside an insulated 1 inch interior and a hardwood plywood
on the interior. What a cozy place for termites to live. What should my
friend do?

We had our boat tented not unlike having a house done, except ours was in the water. Made sealing the tent more interesting.

I'm considering putting "Sunshine Girl" on the hard from April through
November on the Okeechobee waterway or in Port Charlotte. I'm wondering
whether the risk of airborne termite infestation is higher in some areas
compared to others. Would it be safer to take the boat further north rather
than keeping her in southern FL for the summer? Does the east coast of FL
have less trouble with airborne termites than the west coast?

Airborne termite update:

I spoke to Dr. Rudolf H. Scheffrahn, a professor in the Wood-Destroying
Insects Unit of the University of FL's Fort Lauderdale Research and
Education Center. He pointed out that dry wood (airborne) termites are most
prevalent the further south you go in FL. North of Tampa on the West Coast
they are not much of a threat. He also said that colonies of dry wood
termites take years to do much damage. Fumigation for dry wood termites is a
high volume business in south FL with 60-70,000 fumigations per year -
houses and boats. Because of the high volume, prices for fumigation in south
FL tend to be less than in other areas. He estimated the cost of fumigating
a 42' boat in the water at around $600. He noted that sealing the tent is
easier in the water than on land.

His response to my concern about choosing a storage site to minimize the
risk of infestation was to pick the site on the basis of other
considerations and deal with an infestation if it occurred.

I hope this information helps anyone who is concerned about this problem.
