Verizon Nationwide Canadian voice plan

Just called Verizon Wireless to check on the most recent plan available for
voice calling in Canada.

For an additional $20, you can add Canada to your existing voice plan.

However, there are some hitches, or rather, rules.

Your purchased minutes will be prorated for Canadian use if you activate in
the middle of your billing month. Its actually safer to back bill and pay
the $20 for the entire month to prevent the possibility that you might
exceed the pro-rated minutes and go into costly overtime.

We currently have the 700 minute family plan. We  have two phones that share
700 peak minutes.

Now when we added the $20 Canadian option, the Canadian calling is using our
700 peak minutes.

Adding the Canadian plan adds two additional buckets of minutes -

1000 min Verizon mobile to mobile - In the US any call to another Verizon
mobile phone is not chargeable to our 700 purchased minutes. But when in
Canada, it will come out of this 1000 min bucket.

Nights and Weekends - In the US, any call to any phone in the US is not
chargeable to our 700 purchased minutes. . But when in Canada, it will come
out of this 1000 min bucket.

Now, if it's a Saturday and you call another Verizon phone user, it will be
taken out of the mobile to mobile bucket.

Celeste's phone is an older one and needed to be updated for roaming. I
think it was *28 to update its firmware for roaming in Canada. My DROID
receives updates automagically.

Bottom line:

For us Verizon users, its always better to talk mobile to another Verizon
mobile phone but keep an eye on the min. used in that category. Its not
unlimited anymore. And other calls are always better after 9:01pm and on
weekends.

Now, data plans for smart phones and Verizon Broadband users (such as MiFi)
are completely different.

Its WAY expensive. Turn them off at least 10 miles before you get to the
Canadian border. Don't even use them in Canada unless you have barrels of
money to burn.
