Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Hugh Kent
Observers: Elizabeth Kent, Michael Arthurs
Visitors:
We appreciate all the interest in the tower and the hawk watch but remind
everyone that the tower remains closed to members of the public and has a
three-person limit reserved for the Hawk Counters. Thank you to all who are
respecting these precautions. Be safe everyone!
Weather:
Overcast all day with rain or drizzle for most of the time, but it did stop
in the last couple of hours. The gentle Wind was from the west for most of
the day but did turn south west for a couple of hours in the afternoon.
Temperature was around 12c.
Raptor Observations:
The weather halted the turkey vultures and buteos with only one Broad-wing
and one red-tail seen. Again good numbers of Sharp-shinned hawks (260),
but lesser numbers of American Kestrels. It was a good day for Northern
Harriers with 21 seen including 2 gray ghosts.
Non-raptor Observations:
Another day of significant numbers of Blue Jays but much less than recent
days with 'only' 25,780, when will it end? Good numbers of Tree Swallows
hawking over the marsh and the dabbling ducks are slowly increasing. The
day ended with a mad half hour of songbirds around the tower with 8 species
of warbler including a smart adult Canada Warbler and a pair of Blue-headed
Vireos. Full list can be found at https://ebird.org/checklist/S74432499
Predictions:
With wind from the north overnight, and a much brighter day tomorrow,
albeit with wind from the south, we will hopefully get the Turkey Vultures
and buteos back over the tower. Of course, we also hope to see more
sharp-shins, harriers and falcons.
