This symposium showcases the capstone research projects carried out by almost
50 of UWT's environmental science and environmental studies seniors. The
projects presented this year include a wide range of topics from
characterization of metal stress response genes in conifers, to restoration
ecology implementation and monitoring, to GIS use to optimize garbage truck
routes, to metal mobility in mine tailings, to biomonitoring of Puget Sound
health, to characterization of ancient sedimentary environments in Argentina,
to student internships in the public sector and public education, AND MORE!!!
Our students have garnered several awards for their work this year; here are
some of the highlights!
15 of our students presented their work at the UW Undergraduate Research
Symposium in Seattle in May, a testing ground for our own UWaTERS! ;)
EJ Rauschl, Sharon Hunter, Ali Ehle, Bryan Huebner, Stacie Gary, Elanor Wolff
and Robert Tournay were nominated for the Fred Haley Writing Award, and Chelsie
Strowbridge won the long paper category for her paper "Sustainable Development
in Kenya: Keeping the Culture".
Also, high school students from Tacoma's Science and Math Institute (SAMI) will
be showing off their collaborative research project working with UWT's Michelle
McCartha and Jim Gawel measuring metal stress in marine worms and mussels in
Commencement Bay.
Please come show your support and see what exciting things undergraduate
research has accomplished at UWT this year!
Talks begin at 4:00pm and a special poster session reception begins at 5:05pm.
The initial speaker schedule and student poster presenter list is attached. A
final program with abstracts will be available at the event!!!
Congratulations to all our students!
Cheers,
Jim
