Dear Bob,
I would suggest you get in touch with Mike Kasten if you are not satisfied
with the response you get on this forum. He has a number of sail power trawler
ideas. http://www.kastenmarine.com/power.htm
Remember very often you are paying less for the services of the designer than
you do for a sales broker...does that make sense?

I am very interested in the trawler/motorsailer type of boat. My krogen
trawler is at a stage now where I need to go one way or the other
(pilothouse and all deck gear removed, top of salon is 42 inches above the
deck). We will either build a new forward pilothouse ang go with the full
trawler type or add a big enough rig to be a fair sailer with the steering
station in the salon and a small flybridge for better visibility and docking
etc. Personally, I like the sail idea but I'm sure there are other
considerations that I have not thought about. The ballast thing has not been
worked out but would not present a problem. I would need to hang a large
centered rudder, no problem. I have looked into hydraulic centerboards and
that seems to be a good compromise to help keep the draft manageable. I would
like to be able to use this boat as a true and capable, safe passagemaker.
Your thoughts are apreciated.
