I have a 2005 PDQ 34 with yanmar 75's. I have just heard of possible increased performance with a 4 blade prop. Any info would be welcomed as I do not get the mileage I should- even with clean bottom, rpms in proper range, etc..

Well Henry (Sno Dog MV34):
I suppose that Sno Dog won't be getting passed by any more Lagoons after the
numbers you posted with your new 4 blade props on Sno Dog Log. I still find
the speed benefit of more prop hard to justify, but then again, I was wrong
about the Soviet Backfire Bomber too .

Charlie: I think that Henry and Sno-Dog would be the one to answer that,
since he just installed the four blade units, but you must certainly know
about the numerous testimonies on the PDQ Powercat Forum:
http://www.pdqforum.com/viewforum.php?f=17
I hope you share more of the circumstances surrounding your lack of
performance. I haven't heard of poor performing MV34 before without an
obvious flaw. That hull is very easy to push and I would understand your
disappointment.
Charlie,
As you may know, several PDQ owners (including us) have recently
installed 4-bladed props as replacements for the factory-installed 3-
bladers. On Sno' Dog, the results were quite dramatic. Our boat now
runs noticeably smoother and quieter, plus we're seeing an extra knot
of speed above 2800 RPM. At WOT, we're now running over 20 knots! I
have just posted complete results of our Speed vs. RPM tests on
SnoDogLog, see: www.snodoglog.com/Performance.html.
Of course, this is with 100 HP engines. But, PDQ guru, Dick Tuschick (dick@rhumblineyachtsales.com
) has also found a source for 4-bladed props for the 75-HP boats. I
gather these props have just arrived; I haven't heard any test results
yet.
The main incentive to switch to 4-blades seems to be reduction of
vibration. Everyone I've heard from reports a smoother, quieter
ride. But not everyone has reported increased speed. For some
reason, our boat has always performed well. Even with the original 3-
bladers, we were seeing top speeds near 19 knots. One possible reason
for this is that we make a diligent effort to keep our weight down, I
frequently check the shelves and storage areas for unnecessary items.
It's surprising how much stuff you pick up over time! Powercats, as
you know, are very weight sensitive. With full fuel and water, our
boat cruises about one knot slower than she does with 1/4 tank-fulls.
Even though we're seeing improved performance with our 4-bladed props,
I have no data yet on fuel consumption. My guess is that, if we
cruise at the same engine speed as before (3000-3200) we may actually
burn a bit more fuel - because we will be going faster. But, if we
throttle back to 15 knots, we may do better as the engines will be
running slower.
We'll be starting our 1450-mile trip north in a couple weeks, so we
will soon be gathering more data. Check back with SnoDogLog in a few
weeks and see how we're doing. We'll keep you posted.
