As I read the many replies to my posting a week or so ago, I thought
summarizing
them would be helpful for the list. The following is provided for your
review.
Tender Summary
Positive Feedback/Good Advice
a. Get a tender that will carry your anticipated load at planning speeds
b. In general, the bigger the better. Get the most you can handle/fit
aboard
c. Good feedback on the following RIB companies:
AB, Avon, Caribe
d. Two posters remarked a Livingston was very durable, versatile and tows
well
e. Large diameter tubes provide a dryer ride, very important
f. Contrary to many peoples thoughts, you can buy brand new 2 stroke Yamaha
motors
g. One poster recommends two dinghies, one you can roll up, and a larger
fast one.
h. Many posters recommend locking the tender up with hardened chain, not
through a
handle on the boat that can be cut with a knife, but to an eye bolt.
i. Several boaters recommend plastic wheels, 12" in diameter
j. One poster advises location of use is very, very important and may drive
different
choice. Example Alaska rocks and shells, versus C. America sand beaches
k. One poster traded a RIB for an aluminum skiff and really likes the
durability
l. Several posters strongly recommended Hypalon, and NOT PVC
m. One poster remarked that 8 other boat owners had AB RIBs and LOVED them
n. One poster recalled that Jim Leishman liked the Livingston on the ATW 40
o. One poster repeatedly advised flushing the motor every time it's in
salt, I agree!
p. One poster advised through bolting the motor to the tender, or it will
be gone
Performance Reports, planning
a. Caribe RIB lite 9' w Nissan 9.8 two stroke, will plane with 2 adults,
not 3
b. Caribe RIB, 12' w 40hp four stroke, 44mph top speed, but heavy (700lbs)!
c. Portabote, 2hp honda four stroke, 7 knots, not planning, but good speed
d. Portabote, 5hp, 3 adults, 15mph
e. 10' flat bottom inflatable w 5hp 2stroke Nissan would plane 2 people @
290lbs
f. NOTE: My 10' inflatable keel boat w 5hp 4 stroke Suzuki will NOT plane
400lbs
g. 12' Aluminum skiff will plane 2 adults with 5hp 2 stroke Nissan
Negative Feedback/Comments or first hand experience
a. One poster with direct experience that Walker Bay boats were
unstable/poor quality
b. One poster with direct experience putting a hole in a double surface
Caribe RIB, filling it with water. Holed when dragged on oyster shells
c. One poster reports a RIB providing assistance to a swamped Boston
Whaler,
another poster confirms BW without a lot of freeboard are problematic
d. One poster owned a Boss Boat and HATED it. Strongly recommends avoiding
