TWL: Little River Christmas Regatta

We just took part in a beautiful and worthwhile regatta.

Many on this list who have cruised the East coast ICW have passed through
Little River, SC, the stretch from Little River Inlet to the "rockpile". 18
years ago Susie Watson, dockmaster at Dock Holidays Marina, and her uncle
Poo (don't ask) started the regatta with only 3 boats entered. Today 25
vessels took part with 20,000 estimated observers. Every year since, the
local marinas have held a regatta on the Saturday following Thanksgiving to
raise money and Christmas presents for the underprivileged children in the
area. A van-size truckload of toys were collected, as well as several
thousands of dollars.

Since we were leaving Derreen here for the winter, we dressed her up in
Christmas lights and entered. 25 vessels formed in the Little River inlet
just before sundown. The sizes ranged from a 20 foot pontoon to the 65'
Barefoot Princess riverboat from Barefoot Landing, with a working shrimp
boat and casino boat thrown in for good measure.

As darkness set, I was hard pressed to think of a prettier sight than a
strand of lighted vessels in Christmas decor floating through the wetlands
of South Carolina stretching from us in both directions.

Some year if you're cruising south in the fall and the schedule permits,
plan to be in the area and enter. You and the kids will appreciate it.
