3/15. Some observations from yesterday and today. While yesterday's (3/14) winter storm dumped much snow in inland (NW) CT, here on the coast we received only rain and wind. Some observations from today and yesterday: -There was an influx of some large flocks of Killdeer. - 53 at Cove Is., Stamford 3/14 (Sam Buttrick).- 15 at Short Beach, Stratford 3/14 (FM).- 16 at Silver Sands, Milford 3/14 (Tom Murray).- 22 at Hammo, Madison 3/14 (Micky Komara).- 53+ at Sikorsky Airport, Stratford 3/15 (FM). It seems as though migrating flocks got downed by the inclement weather and the wind. Likewise, there were scattered flocks of migrating American Robins around today. And a flock of 200 or so Common Grackles decended on our yard and feeders twice yesterday. Today there were numbers of Northern Gannets flying over the Sound off Stratford, Milford, etc.  March and November are peak times to see this species in CT. They seem to "like" flying in these strong winds (NW at 28-44 mph today in Stratford). Today, there were only a handful of gulls along all the Stratford shore hotspots. Perhaps this storm pushed them on their way northward? I have seen fairly limited instances of mass plankton-feeding by gulls and waterfowl this season...so far. Frank Mantlik Stratford
