SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program
DRIVER ALERT! SR 520 closing this weekend, July 8-11
Drivers should plan ahead for regional construction congestion July 8-11 when SR 520 closes from Montlake Boulevard in Seattle to I-405 in Bellevue. At the same time, city of Seattle crews are closing the I-5 ramps to and from Mercer Street for construction.
All SR 520 highway ramps and mainline lanes in the work zone will close at 11 p.m. Friday, July 8. SR 520 will remain open between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard, and east of I-405. The I-5 ramps to and from Mercer Street also close at 11 p.m.
Nearly 166,000 cars and buses cross SR 520 on a typical summer weekend, and we need people to shift how and where they travel. Between SR 520 and the I-5 ramp closures, congestion is expected to increase on I-90, I-5 and I-405, especially from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 9.
Special I-90 and I-5 express lane operations, Saturday, July 9, and Sunday, July 10

Each day this weekend, the I-90 express lanes will be open westbound from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and eastbound after 1:30 p.m.
Each day this weekend, the I-5 express lanes will be open southbound from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then switch to northbound from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The typical express lane schedule is posted here, and this weekend's altered schedule is here.
Key alternate routes for drivers heading into Seattle from the south end include SR 509, SR 599, East Marginal Way South, Airport Way South and Fourth Avenue South.

By closing the highway for construction on the weekend, we can keep traffic flowing during weekday commutes. On SR 520, construction crews plan culvert installation to improve fish migration as part of the Eastside Transit and HOV Project. At the same time, maintenance crews will spend the weekend testing, inspecting and repairing components of the floating bridge to prepare it for the next storm season.
The highway and ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 11. Details about the major weekend closure are posted online, and other lane and ramp closures are updated regularly on our construction information page.
