The 7081 won't echo any serial input until you enable its output.
Connect, then type 'OUT, RS232, ON' (I think, this is from memory).
After that, assuming your connector is wired correctly, you should then
see data.
If not, swap 2 & 3 on your connector and try again.
Note that this doesn't carry over a power-off, so you have to do it each
time you turn on your meter.
