Coating for Running gear?

Hey Loopers,
I am looking for advice on a coating for our running gear on Adesso. We
have 34" props with 2 1/2" shafts and the barnacles grow like crazy in
Southwest Florida. We keep the boat at the south end of Ft. Myers Beach
for the winter and the rapid tidal flow keeps those barnacles and worms
growing. We tried Teflon coating then we tried prop speed and neither was
very good.

I hear there is a five step process of sanding, acid etching, primer,
epoxy and hard bottom paint. Sounds interesting but I have no details,
Does anybody have any suggestions?

Sand the prop, coat with Interlux Vinyl-Lux® Primewash 353 self-etching
primer, followed by Interprotect® 2000E two-part epoxy coating , followed by
a hard antifouling paint. Check the Interlux website re: antifouling paints.
We used Interlux Fibreglass Bottomkote in 2007 when we went south for 10
months & the combination prevented any barnacles from adhering, plus the
combination stood up well past 500 running hours. If I were to do it again,
I would spray, rather than brush the coats as this would give a smoother
finish. Since we're normally in Lake Ontario, I removed the treatment Last
year (NOT an easy job!). There was a complete DIY article in Passagemaker
magazine in one of the 2006 issues, as I remember.

Hope this helps.

I have had very good results using Petit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier.  Prep
is simple just take the props down to clean bare metal and spray several
thin coats on.  @ $20 a can I use two and get a year or more out of it
during the winter months in Florida.  This was recommended by a friend who
started using it on his boat that spends the summers in the Chesapeake and
winters in Florida static after the move north and south. The divers all
comment on how clean the props are.  I've got a year and over 6,000 miles on
the current coating so the upcoming haul out should be interesting.
