Highlights of reports received November 5 through November 13 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include SUMMER TANAGER, CAVE SWALLOW and
HUMMINGBIRD SPECIES.
November 11 in Buffalo, a female or first year SUMMER TANAGER was
photographed in Delaware Park, feeding on crabapples at Hoyt Lake.
November 12, the TANAGER was refound, after much searching, at the
expressway exit at Nottingham Terrace. In the BOS archives, only two
previous fall records of SUMMER TANAGER; both in November.
November 10, 6 CAVE SWALLOWS above Niagara Falls, between the
Engineerium Building in Ontario and Goat Island in New York. On the
11th, 5 N. ROUGH-W. SWALLOW above the falls, but no Cave Swallows.
In Orchard Park, a HUMMINGBIRD has been at a feeder since November
- The species has not yet been determined. Ruby-t. Hummingbirds
migrate from the region by mid-October.
OSPREYS rarely linger past October - November 5, OSPREY in Clarence
near the Tillman Wildlife Management Area, and November 8, OSPREY at
Dunkirk Harbor.
Two reports of SNOWY OWL this week. One atop a building at 70
Niagara Street in downtown Buffalo, and unfortunately, a road-killed
SNOWY OWL in the Niagara County Town of Porter.
November 11, 11 WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS in the Iroquois Refuge, at Sour
Springs Road, south of Mallard Overlook.
BONAPARTE'S GULLS have descended into the region. An estimated 5,000
to 10,000 on the lower Niagara River on the 11th, plus 400 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS on the upper river in Riverside. Other gulls at the falls - 3
LITTLE GULLS and 7 L. BLACK-B. GULLS. At the power plant overlook in
Ontario, first report of ICELAND GULL, and 4 more LITTLE GULLS at
Queenston. November 9, a juvenile SABINE'S GULL above the American
Falls.
BONAPARTE'S GULLS also in the Lake Erie harbors - 413 at Dunkirk
Harbor and 560 at Barcelona Harbor in Westfield.
November 12 on Lake Chautauqua, 15 TUNDRA SWANS at Mayville, and 485
HOODED MERGANSERS at Ashville Bay. On the 11th, another 15 TUNDRA
SWANS over the Buffalo Airport.
Other reports this week - at the Meadows Road State Land in the
Chautauqua County Town of Arkwright, 100 PINE SISKINS, plus RUFFED
GROUSE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, and numbers of RED-
BR. NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET and DARK-
EYED JUNCO. Three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at the Dunkirk Airport. BALD
EAGLES at several locations in the Iroquois Refuge and Tonawanda
Wildlife Management Area. And a GREAT HORNED OWL calling on Ruie Road
in North Tonawanda.
