TWL: heat exchanger cleaning

Mark asked...

Now I bring
the heat exchanger to the local radiator shop as recommended in previous
posts thinking it's going to cost maybe $35-$50 for the bath. When the guy
quoted me $165.00, I picked up my heat exchanger and exited the shop. Is it
me or did this seem to be way out of line in price?

Dennis responds...

First, remember it came off a boat!

I have had some recent experience with this issue. When we took Sadie B out
of the water last fallI took the heat exchanger to Kissimmee, FL with us
and left it in a recommended radiator shop. I was flabbergasted to get a
bill for $150, but I had not asked for an estimate. Also, they had not
pressure tested the unit, which I had asked for.

More recently, I took the same exchanger to a radiator shop in Burlington,
VT to be pressure tested as I had a small coolant leak I could not find
anywhere else. I told the shop I wanted a pressure test only and described
the problem I had. When I returned after the Paulsbo Trawlerfest to pick it
up, they had cleaned it again as well as pressure tested it. While I was
rehearsing my argument about the size of the bill, the shop manager told me
to "Get out of here and have a good weekend", and did not charge me
anything.

So, it seems there is a fairly wide allowable range of amounts for the
service. By the way, with all this preventative maintenance, the antifreeze
leak is now seemingly gone, but we are close to overheating, which in fact
never happened before. Wish I had one of those high tech infra red
thermometers! Grainger wants $175 Canadian for one. I am going to try
another temperature gauge tomorrow, or whenever we get to Peterborough,
Ontario.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming Grand Haven
Trawlerfest event in Grand Haven.
