Dear Ms. Phoenix,

I am a historian of Africa, having worked and taught in Eastern Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda for about 15 years between 1964 and 2012.  In the US, I have taught at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), at Smith College (Northampton, MA) and at Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME).  In addition to many academic articles and reviews, I have also published six volumes, including Kings and Clans, The Land Beyond the Mists, African Historiographies (with Bogumil Jewsiewicki); and I have edited Defeat Is the Only Bad News, a posthumous publication of a work by Alison Des Forges, on the reign of Musinga (the reigning monarch of Rwanda at the time of German arrival in 1900).

Now retired, I am writing you to inquire if any of the members of the HBCU Library Alliance would be interested in my collection of books, mainly on East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania).  I would be pleased to donate this collection of over 600 volumes to any interested member of the HBCU Alliance.  The collection includes some materials published in East Africa during the 1960s and 1970s, and which are no longer in print.  I have an inventory of the books in this collection, organized by country, that I would be glad to share with any interested party.

In addition to donating the books, I would also pay for the costs of packaging and transporting them, and would provide a subsidy to help cover the administrative costs of cataloguing, etc.  The only request I make is that I prefer to keep the entire collection as one unit, rather than donating individual volumes to separate recipients.

There are many important volumes in the collection, which I hope over the years would be useful to both faculty members and students working on research projects (or just for their own edification and enjoyment).

I would be most grateful if you could inform your alliance members of such a possibility, and will look forward to working with any interested party.

With all kind regards,

David Newbury
