Dear Colleagues,

Thank you to all of you who were present for the NCL Members’ Meeting and Literacy Leadership Awards Reception on September 27. The Members’ Meeting was highly informative, with presentations on current research initiatives at the Goodling Institute and current activities at COABE; an update on the SNAP Education & Training program; and discussion of TANF-WIOA connections with representatives of the TANF Technical Assistance Branch. As he has at every Members’ Meeting for many years, Acting Assistant Secretary Johan Uvin from the Education Department’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) provided a valuable update on OCTAE activities, priorities, and plans. Minutes of the meeting will be distributed and photos from the Awards Event will be posted to the NCL website by the end of this month.

In the meantime, I’m pleased to announce that the membership has elected three new members to the NCL Board:

  • The Rev. David Hendricks, VALUEUSA
  • Mr. Thomas Nash, COABE
  • Dr. Blaire Willson Toso, Goodling Institute for Research on Family Literacy and the Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy, Penn State

NCL Board members serve three-year terms; we appreciate the willingness of these three colleagues to serve through September 2019.

Finally, at its September 26 meeting, the NCL Board elected the following slate of officers for the 2016-2017 year:

President: Deborah Kennedy, Key Words and Center for Applied Linguistics
Vice President: Michele Diecuch, ProLiteracy
Treasurer: Kristin Lahurd, American Library Association
Secretary: Heather Ritchie, Maryland Association for Adult, Continuing, and Community Education

Jeff Carter will continue to work with the Board as Immediate Past President for the next year as well.

I look forward to working with the Board and all of you to promote adult and family literacy in the year ahead.

Cordially,

Deborah
