Re: T&T: radar recommendation

When faced with this decision for our GB49 we elected to go with Furuno
because of their well deserved reputation for reliability and daytime
screen brightness.  If you take a look at commercial boats of various
types, the vast majority are using Furuno.  They have an optional feature
called ARPA which we find invaluable.  It allows you to track up to 10
targets and display their speed, course, closest point of approach (CPA),
and time to CPA.  This is especially useful at night or in poor
visibility.  ARPA also creates vector lines on the screen showing course
and relative speed for each target being tracked.  This is good for quickly
creating situational awareness.  The other feature which can be useful is
chart overlay which superimposes the radar display onto your navigation
chart.  This is particularly helpful for quickly determining if a radar
blip is an aid to navigation or a boat.  There are other manufacturers
which claim to offer ARPA capability but there have been many complaints
about accuracy.  Both ARPA and chart overlay require installation of a
compass sensor unit.

I would be leery of any radar that used a tablet as a display device.
Furuno displays are rugged, weather proof and high screen brightness.  Some
people claim that Garmin and Raymarine are easier to use but I've had no
issues with learning how to use our system.

If cost is an issue, there are many  good, previously owned units available
on EBAY.  I've had excellent service from Max Marine Electronics in Ft
Lauderdale.

Hope that helps,

I may be required to purchase a new radar. Can list members suggest what
new radars and features they would recommend? I have only used plain
vanilla radars that are at least 25 years old. I know there are new
features such as a way to predict collision paths
