Colleagues,

Several Census-related items of interest have transpired this week.

  1. The https://gwipp.gwu.edu/counting-dollars-2020-role-decennial-census-geographic-distribution-federal-funds#Latest%20Release project has released a new https://gwipp.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/zaxdzs2181/f/downloads/Counting%20for%20Dollars%202020%20-%20Comprehensive%20Accounting_Report%207B%20Feb%202020%20rev.pdfthat shows the effect of the Census count on the funding that each state receives from the federal government, and how that funding translates as a percentage of personal income. Project leader Andrew Reamer notes: “The accuracy of each state’s census population determines if it gets its fair share of federal funds... Census accuracy is particularly important for states with high percentages of residents who are poor or live in rural areas." The data on percentage of personal income is an effective way of making a personal connection with the Census.

  2. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund has just released https://www.naacpldf.org/wp-content/uploads/Census-Guide-2020-Final-compressed-1.pdf LDF is working "to ensure that Black Americans are fairly counted in the 2020 Census." The guide covers basic information about the Census, addresses data security concerns, and defines the difference between the Census and the American Community Survey.

  3. The Census Bureau has sent out information about the upcoming Census in Schools Week:

In just two weeks, the US Census Bureau will be encouraging educators
across the nation to incorporate the 2020 Census in their classrooms
during the nationwide kick-off of Statistics in Schools Week the first week of March. Statistics in Schools Week provides an opportunity
for educators to raise awareness of the importance of an accurate census
count and is perfectly timed to turn students into census advocates
within their household – Statistics in Schools Week (March 2-6, 2020) is one week before most households receive their first https://2020census.gov/content/dam/2020census/materials/partners/2019-10/Fact_Sheet_About_How_Census_Invites_Everyone.pdf in the mail. Here is a link to the https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sis/2020census/2020-resources.html provided for pre-K
through 12th grade teachers, as well as ESL and adult educators.

  1. We've had a request to re-send the link to the https://censusproject.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/article-1-messaging-research-presentation.pdf from Census Counts. This is the slide deck that presents data on which Census messages are most effective with different population groups.

I encourage all of you to use and share these resources, and to participate in NCL's Pledge To Be Counted! campaign by https://national-coalition-literacy.org/research/the-2020-census/pledge-to-be-counted/ and by subscribing to NCL's https://national-coalition-literacy.org/join-us/join-the-ncl-2020-census-email-list/. Thank you for all you are doing to promote a full and fair count of adult learners and their communities!

Cordially,

Deborah
