Tonight at 5pm, I had an obliging juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake appear close off shore at Sandy Point. It joined a couple of feeding terns and Laughing Gulls attracted by baitfish. The bird actively fed for about 10 minutes before being lost to the east. I then picked it up distantly, making its way purposefully offshore south into the sound.
Kittiwakes are rare in the sound and this past week showed a marked increase in reports from the area, including one Nick Bonomo and I had off New Haven last week, and follows a bird at Hammonasset this week. It seems that at least multiple birds are likely involved.
