DISCLAIMER: This e-mail from a catamaran dealer.
In response to Roger Bingham's and Georgs' helpful listings (see their recently posted e-mails below) of a few cruising power-cat pricings, here's additonal info regarding two other production models to assist readers' price-comparison of the PDQ-41.
One of these new power cats is 55' and the other 42':
There's a new manufacturer of power cats in Thailand/China. The head of the company is Asian-born, but a graduate of Harvard and MIT, who purportedly made his first "fortune" building airplanes. So he has a first-hand understanding about light-weight/strong construction processes.
The boat is the SLY-55 (a 65' is also available, but not yet built). The first 55 (55' x 22') is already under construction, and scheduled to launch as of about May, 2007. (I believe it's been sold to a U.S. east-coast buyer.) The boat can be had as a basic, minimally equipped 4-cabin/4-head model for about $699K (US), or a well-fitted out yacht (5-cabins/4-heads, genset, complete Raymarine electronics package, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, compactor, flat screen TVs, elec. windlass and ground tackle, flybridge-and-salon helm stations,) for about $799K. That includes 2 x 220 HP diesels. Engine upgrades up to 2 x 440 HP available. Also, for an additional $70K you can get Hamilton Jet Drives, instead of the standard prop-drives, giving you a draft only slightly more than 3', and speeds nearing 30 knots. Optional tankage gives a range of up to 2,000 miles. (Directions on how to find drawings/photos, spec. list, etc. avail. off-line to any inquirees.)
The Destiny 42 (42' x 18'), to be built in the Pacific Northwest, with hull #1 purportedly launching by Nov., 2007, comes very well equipped for $500K. But each subsequent model WILL be priced incrementally higher: about another $10K to $20K higher with each successive model. The manufacturer appears to be heading toward a set price of about $575K, with "early-bird" buyers benefitting from the lower, introductory pricing. (I can't get a precise "fix" on this project yet....but it appears about 90% likely to go into production.)
So yeah...based on the above two cats, and the previous pricing examples noted below (by Roger and Georgs) regarding the Fountaine Pajot Cumberland 44, AfricCat, Lagoon 44, et al.....it would seem that the PDQ-41's price isn't out of line.
If I could have one wish regarding power cats in general, it would be that designers move ON from the seemingly entrenched "boxiness" of so many designs. (Endeavour, Manta, PDQ, etc.) They seem to be stuck in that same design-mode once the hallmark of monohulls like the Tolleycraft and early Bayliners....but such boxiness has now long been abandoned by the monohull market, in exchagne for sleeker lines adn profiles. For power cats to be more successful, I think they, too, need to "evolve" esthetically. This isn't just a personal opinion, but one repeated to me regularly by would-be power-cat buyers. (Are any cat designers monitoring this? If so, I'd be interested in hearing why they think cat designs are NOT yet nearly as sleek or exciting in design as they easily could be. )

Rod Gibbons

Hi Georgs
Aeroyacht are showing (via www.yachtworld.com ) a FP Cumberland 44 at USD
683,520
Appears to be standard spec - NO genny, NO aircon, NO heating, NO holding
tanks. Includes some electronics.
Trawlers Midwest are showing (via www.yachtworld.com ) a new Lagoon Power 44
at USD 550,000. From my experience the extras necessary to bring this up to
cruising specs could add a further USD 100,000
Perhaps supporting my earlier statement, a previously owned 2006 Lagoon
Power 44 with full specs is also shown on (via www.yachtworld.com ) at USD
745,00
I believe that production has ceased on the Alliaura Privilege Transcat 42
which was priced around USD 450,000 - this to concentrate on the larger
(much more profitable??) Transcat 48.

An explanation of what the base $575,000 buys is detailed here for
the new PDQ 41:
http://www.pdqyachts.com/power/41pricing.htm
I'm not sure that one gets with a new AfriCat 420 for the base $685,300.

Let's be sure to indicate new or used when reporting prices.

Right on, Rod. The PDQ's major shortcoming is that it is downright ugly, in
a boxy kinda way. The price and equipment level appears to be reasonable.
Comparisons will always be apples and oranges, so when you put the boat up
against the current issue of monohulls of similar quality and performance
then the PDQ looks like a deal. The layout and execution are superb for
long-term cruising.

With many folks, true beauty resides in the capacity
of a product to accomplish its task adequately. Many
have termed the long-lived Carver Mariner series to
be ugly, but the overall design has lasted for many
years because of the many features that enhance
the livability and total usefullness of that design.
