A few updates related to the reconciliation package and the vote on Dr. Miguel Cardona's Secretary of Education. Dr. Cardona's nomination The Senate HELP Committee votes on Dr. Cardona's nomination as Secretary of Education tomorrow at 10am ET, which is expected to have bipartisan support. Budget reconciliation Late last night the House Education and Labor Committee approved its part of the reconciliation package that will provide $170 billion for education, $40 billion for child care and early learning, and additional funding for libraries and community service programs. The $170 billion is more than two times the entire annual discretionary budget of the Department of Education, however still less than different sectors of the education community have said is needed. The Senate HELP Committee has not yet scheduled its markup or released its reconciliation bill, but congressional Democrats aim to have both chambers pass identical or very similar legislation for final passage of a reconciliation bill by mid-March. The House Oversight and Reform marks up $350 billion for state & local funding on Friday - The other part of the reconciliation package that will have funding that can support education is the $350 billion for states and localities to fight the economic impact of the pandemic. A large percentage of state funding is used for education.
