Visitors:
Thank you to all our observers who helped out today including Michael all
the way from North Bay, Heather from Guelph, Noel, and Juliette.
Weather:
A cold and drizzly day on the tower again. The wind had a northerly
component all day which brought plenty of raptors. By the afternoon, the
sky had cleared slightly.
Raptor Observations:
Today turned out to be a good raptor day! We had over 1200 turkey vultures,
mainly flying to the north in a nice stream. We had good numbers of
kestrels flying in earlier in the morning, and sharpies flying consistently
all day. The highlight of the day was 35 northern harriers. The majority of
them flew over in the afternoon in pairs, 8 of them were grey ghost males.
Non-raptor Observations:
Most of the day was quiet with non-raptor species. There were less ducks on
the marsh than usual, however there were still high counts of gadwall and
American coot. The wind died down near the end of the day and more
songbirds were active around the tower. We had a new species for the season
fly over the tower: eastern meadowlark! The pair was flying with a group of
robins. American pipit, yellowlegs and snipe are present and taking
advantage of the low water levels in the marsh.

Predictions:
Tomorrow will warm up a couple degrees, with southwest winds. We will
likely see sharp shinned hawks and kestrels over the tower, and turkey
vultures to the north. Hopefully the high count of northern harriers
continue tomorrow, and as always, fingers crossed for golden eagles.
