GIG HARBOR’S ROUND ROCK CONTEST IS ON A ROLL

Harbor History Museum Continuing C.E. Shaw’s Popular Competition

Gig Harbor, WA – Harbor History Museum is excited to announce the continuation of Gig Harbor’s long-running Round Rock Contest. The competition was first created back in 1951 by C.E. Shaw, a popular Gig Harbor figure who was always looking for ways to have fun.  Shaw had become well known for entertaining Gig Harbor with Rooster Races in the 30's and 40's.

The concept for the contest is simple.  Participants search for the roundest natural rock they can find and submit it to the Harbor History Museum between July 24th and August 1st, 2018.  The winners of the Round Rock Contest will be announced at the HHM Vintage Fair on August 11th, 2018.

Thanks to our Program Sponsor, Erin Rockery, cash prizes will be awarded to the five rocks judged to be the most perfectly rounded rocks.  First Prize = $100, Second Prize = $50, Third Prize = $25, Fourth Prize = $15, Fifth Prize = $10.

To participate, contestants must follow the rules and regulations posted on the Harbor History Museum websitehttp://harborhistorymuseum.org/round-rock/. Rocks must be submitted to the Harbor History Museum by Wednesday, August 1st, 2018 along with signed affidavit.

All rocks or stones must be no larger than 6 inches in diameter at the widest point. The smallest rock or stone that can be entered must not be less than 1½ inches in diameter at its narrowest point.

Rocks or stones are judged by their spherical measurement, as of a perfect sphere. In case of a tie where two or more stones are the same ratio in measurements, the texture and quality together with smooth surface will be the deciding factors. Where everything is equal between two rocks, the largest rock has preference.

All rocks and stones must have their natural surface and must not be scratched, mutilated, or shaped in any way. To qualify, all rocks or stones must have been found in Washington State and must be of such hardness that they cannot be scratched with the ordinary pocket knife. Each person entering the contest is limited to one entry and only one winner allowed per household.

Questions and inquires may be directed to Zachary Sokolik, Marketing & Events Coordinator at Harbor History Museum at marketing@harborhistorymuseum.orgmailto:marketing@harborhistorymuseum.org.

About Harbor History Museum: Harbor History Museum creates opportunities to experience the heritage of the greater Gig Harbor communities by collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of the area. Our vision is to be the cornerstone that provides a gathering place and a sense of identity for our community. Founded in 1964, the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society dba Harbor History Museum opened its new facility in 2010. The museum campus includes an 1893 fully restored one-room school house; a 65-foot fishing vessel currently under restoration; 7,000 square feet of exhibition space; and a 900-square foot library, research and meeting room. The Museum provides a variety of public education programs. Our core educational program is the Pioneer School Experience (PSE), which serves over 1,400 students every year. Led by a trained “School Marm,” the children experience a pioneer school classroom complete with lessons, recitations, music, recess, and lunch. Our permanent exhibit features professionally designed exhibitions, larger-than-life experiences, and opportunities for hands-on exploration of our region’s rich history and unique heritage. Artifacts, video kiosks, hands-on exhibits, computer interactives, and a small theater bring Peninsula history to life in our permanent galleries.
