National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsGood morning everyone,
Last week I was told that the Senate is really pushing to get this bill done by September 1 and that staff have been working on a compromise with the House. Meeting that deadline would defy most everyone’s expectations from just a few months ago — but, more importantly, I’m also hearing that the allocation will be lowered as part of the compromise in order to come closer to the House’s version of the bill. A lower allocation means there won’t be enough to cover all the increases that are in the Senate bill, including, potentially, the increase for adult ed. So that greatly increases the chance that the increases in the Senate bill will be lowered or eliminated. I know that in the case of another program that got an increase, they’ve been flat out told to expect less in the compromise version (although in that case I think it was one of the rare programs that got a boost in the House bill).
Point is: the increase to adult ed in the Senate bill is all but assured. I think it would be wise for this community to get in touch with their Senators and Representatives as soon as possible (if you haven’t already) and let them know how important the increase is, and to ask them to preserve it in the compromise bill. I wouldn’t wait for AEFL Week at the end of the month — if they really are able to reach a compromise, they’ll be all but wrapping it up by then.
