Yesterday, Sept. 11th Bob Tyler, Jenny Bull, Margaret Liubavicius and I birded Ward’s, Algonquin and Snake Islands on a cool but nice day and though the day started slow again bird wise it ended quite well and below are some of the birds we found.
Great Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Sharp-shined Hawks, Merlin, Chimney Swifts, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Belted Kingfisher, Eastern Wood-Pewees, Yellow-bellied, Willow, Least and Great-crested Flycatchers, 7 Eastern Kingbirds together, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Carolina and House Wrens, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swainson’s Thrush, Gray Catbirds, Warbling and Philadelphia Vireos, 49 Red-eyed Vireos, undercounted, Tennessee, Nashville, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Pine, Palm, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Wilson’s and Black-and-white Warblers, Northern Parula, American Redstart, 4 Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, plus approx. 20 Monarch Butterflies again.
Note:- Both washrooms are open on Ward's as is the one at the city side of the docks but the washroom on the ferry is closed due to Corvid. Some but not all of the water fountains are working but you can obtain water in the washrooms. There is also a washroom at the Island Fire Station west of the ferry dock.
On Sept. 10th Jenny Bull fond 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos east of the washroom at the east end of Ward’s Island and Bob Tyler found a Yellow-throated Vireo just past the Fire Station on Ward’s Island.
There are no washrooms or fountains on Algonquin Island and no washrooms on Snake Island.
On Snake Island there is a water drinking fountain and a water fountain for filling a bucket or pail. The Fire Pits and Camping Sites have been removed for this year.
The Riviera Café just east of the bridge onto Algonquin Island (west of the ferry dock) is open 7 days a week but this could change so you may want to check at https://www.islandriviera.com/
The Island Café straight out from the ferry dock is closed until further notice.
The number of Island visitors has decreased since labour Day but the number of frisbie players on Ward’s Island seemed to have increased so be alert in the course area.
Masked are mandatory on the ferries.
Another Note:- The Island ferry schedules are still on the modified Summer schedule and this schedule is posted on the city side docks and the Island side docks.
