Visitors:
Thank you to all of our visitors to the tower today including JP and
Jackie. Thank you to our incredible observers, Noel, Juliette, John and
Linda.
Weather:
The weather today was very pleasant with temperatures in the mid teens. The
morning started off cloudy and foggy again, but cleared up mid-morning. The
wind was south to south west all day.
Raptor Observations:
Today was dominated again by turkey vultures and red-tailed hawks, with
some red-shouldered hawks mixed in. They were all travelling north of the
tower. There was a handful of sharpies, with harriers, coopers hawks,
kestrels and peregrines in very low numbers. The highlights of today were a
gorgeous adult northern goshawk that flew close to the tower, and two
golden eagles. The second golden eagle flew surprisingly close to the tower
in the late afternoon, giving us the view of a lifetime before landing in
some trees west of the tower.
Non-raptor Observations:
Waterfowl are still in good numbers in the marsh, with increasing species
diversity. A group of 85 redheads flew over this morning. Three sandhill
cranes flew over the marsh in the morning, and we were visited again by the
friendly Virginia rail in the late afternoon. Eastern bluebirds are
continuing to migrate in good numbers, however crows and blue jays are
steadily slowing down. There are many passerines in the trees around the
tower including sparrows, kinglets and cardinals. Surprisingly, monarch
butterflies and black saddlebags were seen today. Many other animals were
active today including turtles, frogs and muskrat.

Predictions:
Tomorrow looks similar to today. Clear skies for most of the day with
south-southwest winds. Raptors will likely be flying north of the tower,
and there is still much to see including vultures, buteos and golden
eagles.
