Today Oct. 8/20 Bob Tyler and I birded Gibraltar and Hanlan’s Points and following are some of the birds we found.

The adult Slaty-backed Gull again at about 2:00 pm as it flew past going south just off the beach on the west side of Hanlan’s Point.

It flew south towards the west side of Gibraltar Point where there was a huge feeding frenzy containing a large number of  Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.

Pied-billed Grebe, American Bittern, Great Blue Heron, Trumpeter Swan, 8 Wood Ducks, Northern Shoveler, Common Mergansers, Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawks, Merlin, Great black-backed Gull, Belted Kingfishers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 34 Eastern Phoebes, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Brown Creepers, 30+ Golden-crowned and 60+ Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Swainson’s and Hermit Thrushes, Gray Catbirds, Brown Thrasher, 5 Orange-crowned Warblers, Northern Parula, 50+ Yellow-rumped Warblers, Black-throated Green Warblers, Palm Warblers, 22 Song Sparrows, Swamp Sparrows, 75+ White-throated and 50+ White-crowned Sparrows, 30+ Dark-eyed Juncos, 90+ Red-winged Blackbirds flying west and Rusty Blackbird.

Note:- All 3 washrooms are open on Hanlan's as is the one at the city side of the docks but the washroom on the ferry is closed due to Corvid. Some but not all of the water fountains are working but you can obtain water in the washrooms.

The Mermaid Café may now only be open on the weekend.

You can obtain ferry schedules, prices, restrictions, etc. at  -  https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/parks-gardens-beaches/toronto-island-park/all-ferry-schedules/

Another Note:- The Island ferry schedules -  Be aware that the Fall Schedule is posted under the Summer Schedule for some reason and there are some drastic changes  First boat to Hanlan's is at 10:30 am, the first boat to Centre is at 10:00 am and the first boat to Ward's is at 6:30 am. These times are for all 7 days of the week.

And again another Note - There will be no ferry to Hanlan’s Point or Centre Island after October 2th, Thanksgiving Day until next Spring but if you want to go to either area after that date you can take a water taxi from the mainland but be aware that the price is one way and if you do not want to walk to the Ward’s Island ferry then you will have to pay an additional fare if using a taxi. I am told that the cost is $10.00 one way but to be sure and to locate a water taxi starting place on the city side you could check the internet. I have never used one so I’m not much help about them.

And one more note – The ferry to Hanlan’s Point may run next Tuesday and Wednesday for the final time this year. Check the ferry schedule on the web.
