This spring, help the local nonprofit arthouse cinema reach their goal of 7,000 members [TACOMA, WA, April 5, 2019] — Since becoming a nonprofit in 1997, The Grand Cinema, located in downtown Tacoma, has thrived because of member support. Membership helps The Grand build and sustain community partnerships, share film, welcome filmmakers, and present events, education opportunities, and film festivals. The local art house cinema is launching a spring membership drive with a goal of reaching 7,000 members. The Grand currently has 6,500 active members. Annual membership levels range from Individual at $45 to the Gold level membership at $500. Available through May 31, 2019, The Grand is also running a membership special. Those who sign up for a two year membership will receive 26 months for the price of 24, and an exclusive tote bag while supplies last. Another way The Grand thanks their members is to offer Free Member Movie Days. On Free Member Movie Day, all members receive free admission to all films, all day long. The next Free Member Movie Day is Thursday, April 18, in celebration of The Grand Cinema’s 22nd birthday. On April 18, 1997, The Grand opened as a nonprofit with only two paid staff and a group of volunteers. It is because of this small band of community organizers and dedicated volunteers—the original members of The Grand, one might say—that the cinema has flourished since its inception as a nonprofit more than two decades ago. Members make up an essential 20% of the theater’s annual budget. “By supporting The Grand as a member, you make it possible for The Grand to continue as THE gathering spot for film in Pierce County. Membership makes possible the unique film programming that you find nowhere else,” says executive director Philip Cowan.
