The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) announces a
search for a
tenure track faculty position in Medical Sociology, to be filled by
September 1,
2012 (preferred, but later start date may be negotiable). Appointment
will be at the
Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank, depending upon the
finalist's level of
experience. We are seeking a sociologist with an established funding
record or
whose research has great promise for a solid funding trajectory.
Candidates should
be academically prepared to teach classes in science and technology studies,
qualitative research methods and medical sociology. Preferred areas of
expertise
include science and technology studies, qualitative research methods,
medical
sociology, global health, environmental health and health policy. A
major research
initiative at the School of Nursing is underway, focusing on the
development,
adoption, and evaluation of technology innovations (e.g., remote monitoring,
mobile applications, telehealth) in health education, promotion, and care.

Candidates who can contribute to and collaborate with others working on this
initiative are especially invited to apply. Candidates should have a
research program
that will be synergistic with departmental teaching and research directions.
Candidates at the senior level must be willing and able to contribute to the
leadership of the department, through periodic rotation to the
Department Chair
position. For full consideration, applications should be received by

2012. Applicants must hold the PhD in sociology at the time of application.

Description of the Doctoral Program in Sociology:
The principal aim of the Program in Sociology is to educate students
interested in
professional careers as sociologists in academic and/or applied contexts
with an
emphasis on the study of issues in health, illness, medicine, health
care, and the
analysis of health and public policies. Coursework in the program is
aimed at
enabling students to develop their understanding of and capacities to use
sociological theory; develop both qualitative and quantitative research
skills, and
statistical capacities; develop a sociological perspective on the many
dimensions of
health, illness, medicine, and health care; develop the focused,
independent research
project necessary for completion of the doctoral dissertation; and
ultimately
contribute to the advancement of sociological knowledge.

Distinctive Characteristics of the Doctoral Program in Sociology
Situated on a health sciences campus, the Program's substantive emphases
lie in the
sociology of health, illness, medicine, health care policy and
institutions. Within
this domain, students select areas of emphasis including: (1) aging,
chronic illness,
and disability; (2) health care economics and policy; (3) science,
technology and
medicine studies; and (4) gender, race/ethnicity, health and health
disparities.

Faculty also have expertise in violence as a health issue, HIV/AIDS
prevention,
ethics of contemporary genetics, corporate behavior in health and health
care,
privatization, and global health. The theoretical bases of the program
focus on
classical, interactionist, and contemporary sociological perspectives,
and the program has a dual
orientation toward qualitative and quantitative research methods. T
hese orientations reflect the current interests of SBS faculty, medical
sociology, and the health and science orientation of the campus (see also
http://nursing.ucsf.edu/medsoc). The Doctoral Program in Sociology at
UCSF is
one of the top Sociology programs and was recently ranked 6th in the
nation by the
National Research Council.

Program in Nursing & Health Policy
Also within the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is the
Program in
Nursing Health Policy, whose principal aim is to educate Master's and PhD
students interested in academic careers in nursing with an emphasis on
the study of
policy issues in nursing, public health, health systems, and health
care. Coursework
in the program is aimed at enabling students to develop their
understanding of and
capacities to use theory; develop research skills and statistical
capacities; and
develop skills in strategic policy analysis; and for PhD students,
develop the
focused, independent research project necessary for completion of the
doctoral
dissertation. All students are prepared for leadership roles that will
ultimately
contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession and the field of
health
policy. Doctoral students must be admitted to the School of Nursing doctoral
program and then elect an emphasis on health policy and they must take core
courses in the nursing doctoral program along with specialty courses in
health
policy.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  1. Teaching and advising doctoral students in sociology and nursing.
  2. Establishing/engaging in ongoing programs of research congruent with
    emphases of the department and/or other organized research units on campus.
  3. Disseminating research knowledge and engaging in professional
    activities at
    local, regional, national and international levels.
  4. Contributing to the leadership and direction of the Doctoral Program in
    Sociology, the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the School of
    Nursing, and UCSF.
