There was a time when I could say Volvo parts were nearly always the
highest priced in the market. Currently working on a fire damage repair
estimate for a trawler with twin TMD40A in the Bay Area, an electrical
fire from a yet to be determined source, took out all electrical systems
including the engine sensors, control panels and harnesses. There are two
type controls panels, one with an upper mounted tachometer which costs
$500 (tachometer sold seperately $200.) and the other has a center lower
mounted tachometer costs $1,500 (includes the tachometer). Naturally the
control panel we need is the more expensive unit x 4 = $6,000.00,
extension harnesses $120, engine harnesses $=unknown, sensors $=unknown. Just
finished repairing another TMD40A single screw trawler which blew a
freeze plug in the exhaust manifold, cracked the exhaust manifold and
turned the turbo charger cole black. New manifold, rebuilt turbo charger,
back up and running $4,000.00 Watch out for Volvo aluminum manifolds,
they use a brass tube and O-Rings to connect the cooling assemblies,
corrosion in these joints make expensive scrap metal of expensive parts. Just
ordered a control panel for a 3 cylinder Yanmar, cost was $400.00, waited
three weeks, Yanmar dealer called an left a message saying a adapter
harness is needed to fit the new panel to the old engine, a 1'-6" adapter
harness cost an additional $75.00 plus shipping, to adapt the panel to
the old harness, you guessed it, the panel does not come with a harness,
which by the way doesn't fit! Yanmar 4 & 6 cylinder exhaust
manifolds/heat exchangers develope a different type of problem, internal
cracks in the the aluminum housing, average cost is $1,200.00. To our
knowledge, while there are few cheap diesel parts on the market, Volvo
still wins hands down in the high priced parts market. Marty Chin Bay
