Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsSorry, I know that this question comes up a lot, but just looking for a Air Draft Max height to travel the following path.
1.) Hudson into Lake Ontario (via Eire Canal)
2.) Trent-Severn Waterway
3.) Rideau Canal then to the Saint Lawrence via Montreal
4.) Saint Lawrence to Lake Champagne then to Hudson.

Below are the air heights and draft limits for the Great Loop.

The Air Heights for the Great Loop
Chicago River...downtown route the air draft is 17 ft.
Calumet Sag Sanitation Canal....19 ft. 1- inch
Erie Canal from Albany to Oswego.........20 ft.
Western half of Erie Canal..... 15 ft. 5 inches OR less --
(with high pool levels after heavy rains as little as 15.0 ft.)
Lake Champlain Route & Richelieu River........17 ft.
Rideau Waterway..... 22 ft.
Trent-Severn Waterway....22 ft.
Maximum Draft Limits for the Great Loop
Draft limits are the sill height from the bottom of the lock sill to the pool water depth of the water level above or below the lock.
Chambly Canal / Richelieu River....... 6.5 ft,
Rideau Waterway....5 feet (Ottawa to Kingston)

Note: The Rideau Waterway is normally accessed by going the Lake Champlain Route, but could also be done via the St. Lawrence
Seaway Route.
Trent-Severn Waterway..... 6 feet (Trenton to Port Severn)

Maximum Beam Widths for the Great Loop
Lock 45 on the Trent-Severn Waterway has an operational width of
23 feet.
The Marine Railway at Big Chute on the Trent-Severn Waterway has
a beam width limit of 24 feet.
