The problem I have with your philosophy on this is twofold-
1-There are a lot of folks that think they have good knowledge and judgment and in fact do not.
2-There are quite few people with the technical knowledge to understand and intention to use their good judgment but something interrupts them or their attention and what they 'meant' to do doesn't happen.
Safety devices help (not fully) protect us from ourselves and the failure of our equipment.
A agree they can be used safely but the intention to do so does not always result in doing so for everyone.
