TWL: RE: Repower costs
Tue, May 14, 2002 4:19 PM
In 3 separate estimates the costs ran about $80,000.00. Of course there is a heck of a lot more to do when going from gasoline to diesel so that's not a good comparison. As reported here several times, the costs and expected benefits to accomplish this were so completely outweighed by keeping the gas engines, that it was ludicrous to consider.

Re: TWL: Grand Banks 42 fuel usage

At +/- 1500 rpm, speed is 8.5 knots, I estimate 5 to 5.5 GPH. At 2000 rpm, 10 knots, 10 GPH. This is non-scientific, no FloScan, etc. The Cats are great, low-stress, trouble free. But, they are WIDE, and, if you prefer to cruise 8.5 - 9 knots, I think that 120 HP ford-Lehmans might make more sense.

I generally use 8 knots as a good estimate of what I'll average in otherwise unencumbered waters, and I push the throttles up to 1750 RPM to do that. Rich Gano CALYPSO (GB-42-295) Southport, FL

If it was me, Double all fix it up estimates and bid if you have time to get the work done. Then you'll know everything is new and done properly. I for one would not ever have the buyer fix anything unless I knew exactly what yard was doing it and could check. Or go see the other boats.

TWL: Re: Offset navigation
Mon, Jan 26, 2004 3:09 PM
My navigation instructor taught me to estimate the maximum error possible in the navigation method I was using (DR or Celestial) then use this distance as an offset for any long distance passage. When you reached the coast, you would know which direction to turn to reach your target destination.

TWL: RE: Re: Balto power

Which he doesn't have if you use Skene's (and Keith's) 85% rule. 85% of 195HP is ~166HP, so he's low on installed HP even by Keith's (arguably) liberal estimate. > I, personally, would like to > see about 250 hp in a boat of that size and displacement to deal with > waves and wind but Balto is not "seriously underpowered" by any means.

We have a 13' RIB with a 25hp Yamaha which I estimate is around 550 lbs. Never had a problem. I got mine thru Northern Tool.

The 3 Wire Boat
Thu, Oct 6, 2005 12:55 PM
Several light switches are now failing again, and the repair estimate is over $400. He's considering ripping out the lights and replacing with conventional wiring and switches. Sounds like it's not ready for prime time yet.

New Waterline Advise needed
Wed, Sep 27, 2006 4:59 PM
After owning the boat for the better part of the year, I believe my estimate was the right one. I did see someone say they set their's 8" above the waterline, which seems extreme to me. With that said I believe it's better to err on the high side. BTW, the only reason to push the waterline closer to the real waterline is aesthetics.
