Defining trawler range
Sun, May 10, 1998 11:07 AM
I haven't been able to do any better estimation than that, 'cause I don't hardly use enough diesel in any given run to make it worthwhile to refuel after a cruising leg at a constant known-speed. Cheers, -Chris (M/V Silverheels; West River, MD; VHF/WCS 9826)

Sea Anchors
Sat, Feb 6, 1999 10:33 PM
Dave -- My best estimate of a sea anchor size for your 42 ft/43000 lb semi-displacement boat would be a minimum 18 ft para-anchor with a 3/4 in three-strand nylon rode 300 ft long extendible (in some fashion) to 600 ft.

My cables will get warm after charging at 120 amps for an hour, and I've estimated the wattage lost there via a temperature guess, and then calculated what the resistance must be. It's about 0.2 ohm, as I remember, which is as small as you can expect from 3/0 cables with a connector at each end, and is also harmless.

TWL: RE: DirecTV and DirecWAY

You will note that DirecWay will not give any type of speed estimate or service guarantee. Note also the need for a rather large dish and extremely precise orientation. We have no direct experience with this service ourselves so this is just hearsay but I suspect this is still not ready for prime time.

In their estimation the potential for a lawsuit is too great to justify taking the risk. No wonder it is becoming harder and harder to find competent people willing to do actual work on boats. Especially work involving design and installation of a system.

A little less than 30K for the whole transit. 33 days estimated. The boat entered the Erie Canal today, hopefully will be at the home dock Friday!! Can't wait. I carefully estimated all of the projects, work and materials that were going to be required, and of course, it is taking 3X as long and costing 5X over what was budgeted, but I am still pleased with the outcome. Like another Marine Trader owner stated, I wouldn't trade even with any other trawler. thanks Martin I.
