TWL: Going slowww for fuel savings
Sat, Mar 20, 2004 3:42 PM
achieve fuel savings....on the order of 20% according to my prior estimate....Or to say in another way, he'll be cruising slower and burning less fuel because he'll be generating less HP....but keeping his engine clean running.

I think that most beginning voyagers under estimate the difficulties involved with passagemaking. One relates to his/her experiences in the past and projects that is what circumstances will be in the future. The reality is to prepare for the worse case scenerio and prepare for this.

Auctions (was Water in transmission)

Invariably these things go for more, often way more, than the initial estimate. Auctions are great for the sellers, and usually not so great for the buyers from a price point of view. I've been to a few auctions, and even been the high bidder on some items.

VHF -- RF Exposure
Sat, Feb 19, 2005 10:32 PM
This is the minimum safe separation distance estimated to meet all RF exposure compliance requirements. This 5 meter distance is based on the FCC Safe Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) distance of 3 meters added to the height of an adult (2 meters) and is appropriate for all vessels.

leaking fuel tank stuff again

Incidentally, by doing most of our own work on the boat we estimate we save 80-95% over paying others to do it for us, drastically reducing the cost of cruising. By living on and using the boat and its several systems constantly, we have relatively low maintenance since most items stay in shape through needed exercise.

As the surveyor will have estimate the capacity by inspection and measurements. Of course you can verify all this when you fill them, when empty. Of course that is going to cost real money. Failure to have these capacities reliably known, could get you into big trouble on a long passage.

Dinghy Chocks
Thu, Aug 17, 2006 12:03 PM
The breeze was behind them, with a quartering, following sea estimated at 3'-4'. When they were about 15 miles out, they got a call from their buddy-boat that their dinghy was coming loose. It was stored on the swim platform, on some kind of a bracket or davit.

Dinghy Davit Winch

The saving grace here is that I estimated my dinghy and motor weigh about 400 lbs. and nobody is underneath it unless they are swimming. Using a 40 A circuit breaker may serve as a safety limit. Now I am looking for a two terminal 12 vdc weatherproof jack and plug rated at 40--90 A.

Our boat took a 3 degree roll (roll gauge installed) and I will estimate the roll of the motor yacht at 15 degrees. It certainly depends where you boat, what boat you have, and what you want to spend, but active fin stabilizers, when under way are outstanding.

The idea of predicted log racing is to estimate the exact time it will take your cruiser to navigate various legs of a 16-mile course - then run the course without the aid of computers, watches and other navigational aids. Adalian had the highest average score among the thousands of predicted loggers who race around the country.
