Re: T&T: Survey Finds Fuel Tank Leak

A yard that is familiar with the work involved could undoubtedly give you a good ball-park estimate for the cost of replacing the tanks. The work on Sanderling consisted of pulling both engines and a genset, then both tanks.

A conservative way to estimate frontal area is to multiply the beam by the height of the superstructure. An even simpler way is to multiply the beam by 3/4 of the beam. By this calculation, my Willard has about 100 sq. ft. of area. A Nordhavn 40 has 160 sq. ft. of area. A Nordhavn 47 has about 195 sq. ft. of area.

A single battery will last about 2 months of use for us and we use them a lot - I'd estimate about one battery for 4+ hours of actual use. ================================== Jeffrey Siegel M/V aCappella DeFever 53PH W1ACA/WDB4350 Castine, Maine www.activecaptain.com Content, Communications, Community

Replacing AC/heat pump - Recommendations?
Wed, Sep 5, 2007 6:37 PM
I estimate it to be at least 15 years old so it has lasted a long time. I have been searching the internet looking for best AC units now as I know there have been significant improvements in these systems.

Re: T&T: boat speed with outboard

My estimate is 3-4 mpg. We drag the stern drive through the water to some degree, which isn't terribly efficient, even when it's up as far as we can get it. Have you considered a 26 or 27-footer with diesel? Ours has a 260hp Volvo KAD44 duo-prop diesel, and gets 3-4 nmpg at 6.5 knots, even though it can cruise at 18 knots.

My only point here is unless you have the power curves/charts given by the manufacturer, your estimation of percentage of power is a very rough guess. My current engine produces 190hp at 3100rpms and 240hp at 3300rpms. That is 25hp per 100rpms.

The estimate of $100K to $150K premium for the z-drive is correct. I'm happy to share any other experience about the z-drive or Cape Horn that the list or individuals find interesting. -Wray

When I finish fueling, I note that I am ALWAYS within five percent of my estimated fuel burn. Who needs a fuel consumption meter anyway? Just one way to skin this particular cat. --Milt Baker, Nordhavn 47 Bluewater, Fort Lauderdale Chuck wrote: Looking for recommendations for a fuel flow meter for the single 120 Lehman on our MT34.

I estimate the overall cost for the joy of being on the water is about $7000 a year exclusive of major repairs. Last year a new shaft and bearing job cost me over $5000. It would be an expensive toy to support if I was worried about my job.
