But I estimate that only about 10% of the offered boats are worth buying at or near the price offered. That at least 20% of the boats offered are not worth a second glance at 1/4 the price and that at least 60% of the offered boats are not worth more than about 2/3 the asking price. (I know that's not 100%). Why the 60% not worth the 2/3 price asked?

I would get up and look over his estimates and maneuvering with high speed ships to see how he was doing. He could do the job better than most adults, some with licenses. Kid's learn judgement by practice. Give them supervision and room to learn and they will learn fast enough to put most adults to shame.

Those mileage estimates are probably a little bit short, but they're close. I know that a lot of people come up the CA/OR/WA coast. If you can do that, you can do this. Fuel is readily available. The fuel dock in Cordova is a bit rough. There is no dock, just the pilings on the pier. The Valdez fuel docks are very nice and easy to use.

I might suggest that you contact one of the boiler manufacturers or a good local heat/ac place and get an estimate of how many BTU/Hour you will need under the expected conditions and then see what choices are available.

Stabilizers for Trawlers

We crossed the Strait of Georgia a couple of times earlier this month when the conditions were bordering on my limits, and I estimate that roll was reduced by at least 75 percent. This in conditions where previously we would have been standing on the wheelhouse doors.

Notes from Practical Sailor

{For what it's worth, my 5/16" G4 hi test chain, working load 2900lbs, has held in 70knot winds, a load of about 9000lbs, I'd estimate on the above table.) I did not realize the load was quite that much. Another interesting piece was a letter to the editor from a reader.

By some estimates, the invasive zebra mussel costs the Great Lakes region $1 billion a year in damage and control costs and has made its way downstream to the Mississippi. Moving upstream, the Asian carp jeopardizes the $4.5 billion annual Great Lakes sport and commercial fishing industry.

Hi Mervyn It's worth getting an estimate to repair/replace the damaged areas. If the wooden stringers are encapsulated in fiberglass, a good surveyor would probably have told the buyer that this problem is present in almost all older boats.

I personally think the cost in fuel burn/speed penalty is a lot more than the "estimates" we see from the manufactures when you really need them in a contrary sea state. The systems that were spec'd for Swan Song all had hydraulic pumps in the 15 to 20 HP range with double belts.
