It turns out that oil temperature can be more directly estimated by relating it to the oil pressure than to the coolant temperature. In addition to coolant temperature, my Cummins 8.3C reports engine oil and transmission fluid temperatures. The oil pressure decreases in almost inverse proportion to the oil temperature.

His estimate to repair $2000.00! Obviously, I was not a happy camper. However, the other mechanic I had called, Joe Helseth of Helseth Machine and Marine Services showed up to take a look. I gave him the details and told him what the other mechanic had said and he dropped into the engine compartment to take a look.

Once in the boathouse, however, the purchaser asked to have a chat and said the mechanic had suggested that the injectors and pumps be serviced, a shaft pulled and straightened, etc., etc, and that the total cost was estimated to be a couple of thousand, and could he assume I would reduce the purchase price accordingly?

TWL: My Introduction to the List

My best estimates put us at about two to three gallons an hour on the main while cruising and about three quarts of fuel per hour to feed the generator. Without adding any additional tankage we can go eight-hundred, maybe even a thousand miles without refueling.
