It's Thanksgiving week here in the States, so I'm stressing about how I'm going to get everything done while working right up to the night before the big day.  Family is coming for lunch, the house isn't clean, all the groceries aren't bought (most, but not all), and I had wanted to make a few things ahead but didn't get to this weekend because other responsibilities crowded out my plans.  Arg!

OK, thanks, I feel a bit better now getting that off my chest.

Hello all:

Has anyone received unsolicited proposals to purchase cell tower sites from your local government? The City here leases a number of sites to various providers, and an investment firm has offered to purchase the revenue stream from the leases (usually 20 years) for an up-front cash payment. I was wondering if anyone has negotiated these agreements?

Here's an interesting article that has made me think again about the trade-off that probably a lot of us made when we went to work for a governmental entity.  I haven't regretted it, although I do sometimes wistfully wish I had the income of my law school friends who went the big law route.

Also, as to being less ambitious at 35 than I was at 25, I would say that I've achieved a lot of what I wanted at that age.  I've just been informed that I've been promoted to Senior Attorney, which is as high as most people get in this office, and the lowest you can be without management duties.  I still would like to advance one to two more positions in this office, which would put me at one slot below the top job, but at this stage I wouldn't want to be City Attorney, mostly because I have 3 small kids and they are my first priority.

Thought-provoking, at any rate.....

I am curious as to what types of hours people are working.  I certainly am not putting in the amount of hours that were necessary at the big firm before I entered government practice.  Anyone care to share?

No, but we did have an unsolicited proposal to purchase a large amount of mineral interests for an up-front cash payment and a small portion of the revenue stream.  Our people got stars in their eyes over the amount of the up front payment, but when we ran the numbers out over the life of the deal, the up-front cash didn't touch the amount we would make off the minerals over time.  So, I just caution you to make sure someone runs the numbers and doesn't get too enamored with that up-front payment and end up making a bad decision.

I don't mind sharing.

My schedule is 8:30 to 4:30 (35 hours per week).  Those hours are
adjusted so I can pick my stepkids up from school when they are at our
house (about 60% of the time) and I work longer hours when they are with
their mom.

I am paid by the hour so when I attend council meetings (like tonight)
that goes on my timesheet

In the New Year we are moving to a salary type compensation so we won't
be counting hours but will make more to reflect that time.

I am well-compensated compared to what I was making in private practice
but Fort McMurray is a bit of an anomaly.  I am busier now than I was
ever in private practice and we have opened nearly 100 more files this
year than all of last year.

I don't mind sharing. My schedule is 8:30 to 4:30 (35 hours per week). Those hours are adjusted so I can pick my stepkids up from school when they are at our house (about 60% of the time) and I work longer hours when they are with their mom. I am paid by the hour so when I attend council meetings (like tonight) that goes on my timesheet In the New Year we are moving to a salary type compensation so we won't be counting hours but will make more to reflect that time. I am well-compensated compared to what I was making in private practice but Fort McMurray is a bit of an anomaly. I am busier now than I was ever in private practice and we have opened nearly 100 more files this year than all of last year. Sincerely, Tamara D. Epple, B.A., J.D. Subject: [Younglawyers] Trade-offs
Sensitivity: Confidential

Here's an interesting article that has made me think again about the
trade-off that probably a lot of us made when we went to work for a
governmental entity.  I haven't regretted it, although I do sometimes
wistfully wish I had the income of my law school friends who went the
big law route.

Also, as to being less ambitious at 35 than I was at 25, I would say
that I've achieved a lot of what I wanted at that age.  I've just been
informed that I've been promoted to Senior Attorney, which is as high as
most people get in this office, and the lowest you can be without
management duties.  I still would like to advance one to two more
positions in this office, which would put me at one slot below the top
job, but at this stage I wouldn't want to be City Attorney, mostly
because I have 3 small kids and they are my first priority.

Thought-provoking, at any rate.....

I came to work for Leawood after working first in West Virginia Economic Development Office, and then at a midsize firm as a bond attorney.  We work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. here.  If you leave for any reason, including doctor's appointments, etc., then you have to fill out a form and get it approved, and your vacation/sick time gets docked accordingly.  I also work 3-4 night meetings a month that can last up to 10 p.m.  We accrue sick and vacation time.  The first 5 years here we get 10 vacation days and 2 personal days.

I like that I am no longer working until 10 p.m. or later and waking up at 5 a.m. to my blackberry going off.  I also worked with two partners who routinely slept at our office.  Christmas-forget it.  We had most of our closings in December.  But, I also liked that I could come and go as I pleased, but for meetings or things that required my attendance in the office.  I also miss my expense account.  Haha.  I truly enjoy the people I work with here at the city, and I guess the manageable work load is worth the trade off.

Hello all:

Has anyone received unsolicited proposals to purchase cell tower sites
from your local government? The City here leases a number of sites to
various providers, and an investment firm has offered to purchase the
revenue stream from the leases (usually 20 years) for an up-front cash
payment. I was wondering if anyone has negotiated these agreements?
