Some of you just emailed me asking how my northern winter is going. It's
going like this:

Jim, some of us have been here for over fifteen years and over time have
become acquainted with the "winter doldrums" when there are not quite so
many out on the water encountering "boaty" things to comment upon. Even so,
extreme cold weather IS a boating topic because so many have to properly
prepare for it to avoid disastrous damage. We are always interested to see
how Fred deals with it since he leaves Tug 44 in the drained canal behind
his house. He sends photo link which we farther south always find
interesting. David tells us of the big lakers frozen into their winter
berths and how solid the ice in on Superior. We in the gentler climates
like to tell them how our winter boating projects and cruising are going
with some gentle ribbing about our kinder weather. It all adds to the
"community" feeling we get; so hang on and watch because the good stuff will
show up.

Rich,
Nice note. Since we are also frozen in up here in Wisconsin, we also enjoy hearing from Fred re the travails of Tug 44. We are also still appreciating the timely Erie Canal info from last summer.

Hey Capt. Jim,
Over the years, many of us who have been helped and have helped others have
become friends - even though some of us have never met in-person. We don't
mind, in fact we enjoy the informal exchanges such as these that veer off
topic from time to time.
Just note the names on these little exchanges are the same people who come
forth with the most accurate and reliable, often extensively researched and
personally experienced information are the same bunch who throw things in
neutral to engage in some light hearted camaraderie.
So Fred's iced in up on the Erie and that means he's open to some fun as he
slowly goes stir crazy. But he's your go to guy for anything "Erie Canal."
You'll need his info and wisdom as you traverse that part of the loop. Ralph
will be your go to guy for all things mechanical, electrical and otherwise
confounding. Many others will jump in to rib and rile or just be funny. So,
if you don't want to join in these side exchanges we certainly understand.
Just hit delete.
But, we'd rather get to know you informally so we can know how to best
include you and know when seek out your expertise, as well as, be able to go
the extra step to help whenever we can.
Join in the fun.
Best,
Bob

Actually the reality is this is very timely as it has a direct
relationship with those beginning or completing the loop. Snow pack
and melt are flooding contributions that can and have disrupted travel
on the Erie Canal and thus important to monitor with regards to
planning. As mentioned several times this is a forum composed of

Flooding on the Eire Canal is not the only issue. Ice pack on the upper
Great Lakes also impacts water levels in the summer. As most know, the
Greats have had low water levels in recent years to such a degree,
especially on Lake Michigan and Huron, that marinas have had difficulty.
They either have had to dredge at their own expense or close. And boaters,
especially those without local knowledge, have kept propeller repair shops
very busy. With Superior frozen and most of the other lakes nearly frozen
there is not as much evaporation or lake effect snows which will directly
impact water levels this summer -- specifically, higher levels which is
good. Also, for those looping on the upper lakes, the water will be
noticeably colder this year in the North Channel of Huron which will
effectively eliminate swimming. 52 degree water anyone?
So winter weather in these parts does impact looping. Having local knowledge
of Lake Superior, I suspect there will still be some ice floating around
after Memorial Day this year, quite possibly longer.

As an addendum to my post yesterday, heavy snow in the Great Lakes
watershed, which there certainly has been this season, will also contribute
to higher water levels as the snow melt eventually winds up in the lakes.
That is good. However, as noted earlier, this has been one of the coldest
winters in decades with most of the big lakes partially or completely
frozen. That means colder water next summer which very well may translate
into more fog. Are we have fun yet?
FWIW, we are awaiting another lollapalooza of a snow storm later today (12
to 15 inches on top of the 70 or so inches already received). Then next week
it is arctic-city with temps reaching 20 below (actual). That is very cold
for the end of February, even in this part of the world. Could someone
please call Al Gore and tell him we need some warmer weather?
