Don’t know if any of you have been following the revision of the Canadian Canal lock and mooring fees.
But they are about to approve a huge increase. Mooring $20/ft and lockage $15/ft. That puts the one season fees for great loop boat in the approx range of $2000..
If you are bothered by this.. I would urge that you send cards and letters to Canada’s Park Service and members of parliament.

If it is for a 30' boat, we're talking about 1000$ and for a 40', 1400$. So
it's about 45$ per night for 30 nights, cheaper than any marina. And if it
takes 60 nights to do the trip, it falls to 22$ a night.
To pay 2000$, you'd have a 57' boat. I don't believe there are that many
55'+ boats who take the Trent-Severn or Rideau route.
I'd be curious to know how much it cost to keep those canals open for our
solely pleasure. There is no commercial or military traffic anymore. And I'd
be curious to know how much a boater spend during the whole trip on the
Trent or the Rideau.
As Peter McKay said some years ago about the train in remote areas, "Use it
or loose it".
I did it some year ago. One of the best and most beautiful trips of my life.

There is no doubt in my mind from the enjoyment we've had cruising on the Rideau Canal system, it will be money well spent. You can't expect the Canadian tax payers to subsidize us comfortably off pleasure cruisers any more.

Or alternately, instead of responding to the Canadian bureaucrats, simply don’t go to Canada. Vote with your pocket book. Spend your money in the USA where we still have a struggling economy on the brink of recession. Plenty of great cruising ground in the USA.

Don't forget to add the nightly charge for electricity on the lock wall,
which was $12.50 per night last year payable to the lockmaster at each lock
with electric service. Don't know what it will be this year but surely it
will not be cheaper. I would expect it to be higher. That will change your
statistics and perhaps comparison with marina rates. Not every lock wall had
electric last year but they were in the process of adding more as the season
was progressing.

Interesting observations on the fees. However, in looking at the Rideau website which lists the old fees and the new proposed fees, I'm not seeing that kind of money being asked ($2,000).

There was a meeting in Ottawa on Feb 14th to discuss an alternate plan being
proposed by commercial operators and various town and Provincial officials
along the Canadian Canals. I have not seen the results of that meeting.

From the URL you provided, I see the combined lock and mooring wall fee to be $15 + $20 = $35/ft.
Our 41ft Defever trawler would cost $1435, almost double the $760 we paid last year.
The real cost becomes more when you add in the $12.50+ per night for electric. We didn’t and couldn’t use the lock wall electric every night because some lock walls did not have electric service.
We were in the Canada locks and canals from Jun 15 - Jul 20 when we entered the Georgian Bay.
That’s 36 nights
Subtract
7 nights at marinas
4 nights at anchor
So 36 nights -11 = 25 nights on lock walls.
Wild guess....maybe we got AC electric for half of those nights. (I wasn’t keeping track of this statistic).
$12.50*12 = $150 addition to the seasonal pass for lock and mooring.
My 25 nights ended up costing 760+150 = $910
$910/25 = $36.40 per night LAST YEAR
This year (potential) -
Electric $14/night, x 18 nights (more power locations available)
My 25 nights might end up costing 1435+252 = $1687
$1687/25 = $67.48 per night for our 41 boat, equals about $1.65/ft/night
In 2012, almost all the marinas along the rivers were commonly priced at $1/ft/night including electric. Saw one marina, Paris Landing State Park in KY, that was only $.75/ft/night.
