This morning, while riding the train, I saw a Killdeer near the tracks. I
sure hope it left that area. It was in the Branford area.

Angela, maybe early but it could very well have been a Spotted Sandpiper.
The main point here is did you notice a stiff wingbeat which is
characteristic of the species? This is but one example of being able to
identify a species even if you got a poor look of it’s plumage.

Thanks Paul - no I did not see that wingbeat - and I am very familiar
with it - the bird flew straight down at a slow angle without flapping at
all, then banked slightly out of sight to the stream, so maybe that was its
last glide down before landing.  Room fairly soundproof so heard nothing -
but when I walked down there, a wood duck flushed further upstream - but
they don't have white stripes in their wings, at least in my experience -
and the bird I saw was smaller and definitely not a duck.

Stay tuned Frank! We had a Pine Siskin at my parent’s feeder in Barkhamsted
and I heard one in my yard in New Hartford - they’re here!

A friend in Kent also had a swam of "a hundred or more" goldfinches at
one time.  Just half a dozen regulars at my feeders.  Just 1 pine siskin on
2/24/25.

Naugatuck River at the Derby Dam area, about 1000 is a conservative
estimate.
