Extralimital Note: A gull in MA is being described with the words
"appears to be a strong candidate for Yellow-legged Gull", which is a
European species that previously alternated between being a subspecies
of either Caspian or Herring Gull (or so I have read.) I can't
imagine any of CT's gull enthusiasts not having already heard about it
anyway, but of course the place to read more about it is massbird.
Another Note: For something even more uncertain but closer to home,
see Frank Gallo's report (below) about a bird seen on Tuesday as
Silver Sands.
Yet Another Note: Anyone who likes the idea of finding birds in CT
that don't usually get here could appreciate a CTBirds message today
from Dave Provencher titled "Early Birds?" (Migration is a lot more
active than you would think from reading these daily compilations, as
anyone reading CTBirds would know.)
From Frank Gallo:
04/12/11 - Milford, Milford Point -- at least 2 male Northern
Shovelers.
Milford, Silver Sands State Park -- a Great Egret with a bill that was
so dark it looked black. Anyone birding the area is encouraged to
keep their eyes open, and photographs would be nice!
04/13/11 - Milford, Milford Point -- 5 Northern Shovelers and a pair
of Blue-winged Teal continue. The Shovelers were seen in the morning,
the Blue-winged teal were there at 5 p.m. on a rising tide.
From Paul Cianfaglione:
04/13/11 - Hartford, Hartford North Meadows (private property) -- 1
VESPER SPARROW.
From Tina Green:
04/13/11 - Westport, Sherwood Island SP -- (8-9:30am), 12 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS on the model airplane field, 3 BROWN CREEPERS, 1 BROWN THRASHER,
2 FOX SPARROWS.
From Scott Kruitbosch:
04/13/11 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON at
Meig's Point.
Stratford Point -- At least 9 NORTHERN GANNET.
From Bob MacDonnell:
04/13/11 - Niantic -- Yellow-crowned Night Heron pulling worms
alongside the Robins in my next-door neighbor's front yard.
From Bev Propen:
04/12/11 - Milford, Milford Point -- 5 Northern Shovelers (3 male, 2
female) with lots of head bobbing activity.
