Good morning,
My neighbor just texted me that there is Great Blue Heron in the back yard.
It is just walking around . This is a condo complex in Niantic. We both
live close to a marsh, not sure why it is hanging out in the yard. I am not
sure if it is injured as I am at work in New Haven. Any idea why it would
stay in a yard?

6/25  Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center  9:30am-11AM.  sunny,
hot, low tide.
Camp is in session, so the building is busy with camper activities.
Our Purple Martin colony is flourishing- 2 gourds have chicks and many
gourds have eggs. Osprey chicks are growing.  Several other ospreys in area
flying around with fish in their talons.
On the Marsh:  6 Canada Geese,  1 Great Egret, 1 mallard.
On the grounds:  Robins, Cardinals, 1 Mockingbird that thinks it's a
cardinal and blue jay, 1 Catbird, several Common Grackles, House finches
and birds bathing in the fountain.
A Walk on the sandbars along LIS side- Several birders out.  Many Piping
plovers scurrying around with 2 sitting on nests,  3 Semipalmated
Sandpipers, 1 Semipalmated Plover, many Least Terns flying over carrying
fish, about 8 American Oystercatchers sitting on rocks with 2 pairs on
occupied nests, 4 D.C. Cormorants drying off and sunning, and 3 Common
Loons (possible family unit) diving and feeding in Long Island Sound.
Full report on Ebird.

We had one in our yard once; it just hung around for a while and then took off. We live near a stream, so we figured it was just checking out the neighborhood. My only concern would be if it is injured and there are dogs, etc. that could get to it.

Hi Jeri -

I agree with Chris, especially since I watched a Great Blue Heron feasting on voles at Bauer Farm in Madison several times last Fall.  See my eBird checklist for photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S200204806  (caution: not for the faint of heart).

Amazing to watch; but not for the voles!

Hi Jeri - I agree with Chris, especially since I watched a Great Blue Heron feasting on voles at Bauer Farm in Madison several times last Fall. See my eBird checklist for photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S200204806 (caution: not for the faint of heart). Amazing to watch; but not for the voles! It is just walking around . This is a condo complex in Niantic. We both live close to a marsh, not sure why it is hanging out in the yard. I am not sure if it is injured as I am at work in New Haven. Any idea why it would stay in a yard?
