If you are a minimalist boater, they are a good buy in my estimation. I don't own one now, they don't build slow roomy trawlers that use 2 gph at full throttle but I would guess they soon will. Tom

Ohio River Lock 52 Mile 938.9

Currently it is estimated that there will be 4 closures during this time period, each lasting approximately 7 days each. The chamber will be open for a maximum of 7 days between closures to reduce the vessel que. For "loopers" it probably means continued delays, but improved versus the current situation.

Adding batteries
Mon, Jan 22, 2007 12:52 PM
Since my batteries are only a year old, I would estimate they still have 90% of their life. Also, remember that my existing bank is adequate. If I could simply add two more 6V gells to my bank without making a huge project out of it, I might give it a whirl.

Re: T&T: Rain X

I would estimate that the true wind speed (combined ambient wind on the bow and boat speed) must be ten knots or greater for it to have any effect. Otherwise the visibility can be just as poor, or poorer, than with an untreated surface. After all, Rain X was developed for automobiles which generally travel faster than 10 mph.

Anchorage noises part 58
Sun, Jan 13, 2008 12:52 AM
I sometimes have difficulty estimating final distances and swings, and have moved on several occasions to try and get it right. Always buys friendship points from one's neighbors. George

Why do longer boats go faster?
Mon, Jan 14, 2008 8:30 PM
Maybe the formula for hull speed is just a rough estimate, but it seems to ignore the shape of the hull, particularly its beam. I discussed this at my local lap pool and concluded that disstending my stomach would probably not reduce my lap times. Can you explain this issue to me please? Thanks Tom

But it's hard to measure the volume of an irregular shape such as a boat, and so you are permitted, for certain purposes, to "estimate" tonnage using a formula. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com

Re: T&T: Radar

The ranging function gives an accurate estimation of distance to other vessels, buoys, or anything else of interest -- as long as it is in radar range. Also, it is my experience that I often see other vessels on my radar screen before I see them visually, even in broad daylight.

Based on where the wave rises again I estimate the river current at 4 knots. About 7- 10 knots durin g spring freshet. There are three bridges. If every bridge pier support had a big turbine built into the pier base the town could power itself. Arild

Not just for cruise planning but to help estimate distance between anchorages etc.
