TWL: Power reqt. for heavy trawler
Wed, Mar 7, 2001 6:34 PM
Given the weight and size of your boat, its estimated speed will be about 9 kts. The usual rule of thumb for most naval architects is that it takes an engine delivering approximately 1 hp per 500 lbs displacement to push a displacement hull at its hull speed. In your case this works out to 156 hp.

Re: TWL: Rogue, Freak, Killer, Giant, WAVES

Comparing the wave to the Mojo, I would estimate the wave at about 60 to 70 feet. Because of the shallow water at the entrance to Morro Bay, the wave came out of nowhere, generated by a storm somewhere out in the Pacific. The boat was heading out the entrance, not returning.

Re: TWL: Dinghy crane info

I estimated my dingy to weigh about 350 lbs so I allowed for 500 lb... The boat already had a substantial mast and standing rig, which I used. The new boom is 3.5" sch 80 aluminum pipe -- 14 ft long. I used Rule electric (both directions) winches -- rated for a maximum load of 3000 lb -- one for the boom & one for the hook.

Re: TWL: Re: Containers Lost at Sea
Fri, Jan 11, 2002 6:47 PM
Estimates ranged from forever to not long, all dependent upon how well the containers were sealed. (Apparently, they have barely adequate seals in general.) The shipping rep made a comment that there was an effort under way to develop and install two plugs in the containers that would blow/disolve (??)

TWL: RE: Kolstrand anchor winch
Sat, Aug 10, 2002 6:30 AM
I talked to Kolstrand a few weeks ago about enlarging the drum to carry heavier chain and was given an estimate of around $1K for them to fabricate a wider drum and provide a new cover (I'd be responsible for changing the mounting around, which would probably be a huge job since I'd have to either change the way the chain was lead or shift the entire windlass

Re: TWL: Comparison among 3 inflatable dinghies

You can see through the bottom up to 5 or 6 mph he estimated before there's enough turbulence and bubbles to obscure the view. Given that I live in Florida and that the Bahamas are close, this is definitely the next dinghy that I would buy. But then my Achilles is 15 years old and still going so I'm unlikely to be in the market soon....

Re: TWL: Re: Separation of lights
Fri, Jan 31, 2003 7:00 PM
Actually it is 46 inches not 40 as I estimated. If the lights are bright enough or or one is considerably brighter than the other, this distance may not be sufficient. Don't get confused over the "unscreened" versus screened. There may not be much difference except near the edge of the screening. Capt. Mike Maurice Wilsonville, Near Portland Oregon
